Heather Higbee- Writing as a Therapy

Writing can be used as a therapeutic technique to help alleviate many different physical and physiological problems. Much research has been done to prove that writing helps lesson symptoms of health problems. Writing can help recovering substance abusers steer clear of their old habit and set a path for their new life. As well, mental health patients find writing as a way to express themselves if they have difficulties communicating with the world around them. There are many different programs available which set up writing courses based on time of writing and how often the subject writes. While some writing programs allow people to write for as long as they feel is necessary, others give time intervals such as 20 minutes every day or an hour every other day. In all, writing provides to be a very effective way to help those with a wide variety of physical and mental health problems.

"Bill of Rights." Constitution Society Home Page. 20 Mar. 2009
.

The bill of rights is .org cite. This can be useful. I think this cite will help in the research process primarily because it states what exactly our freedom of Speech, Religion and Press is. This is important because this shows how the Patriot act is a violation of our Rights. This cite also has the other amendments on there, could be beneficial down the road.

"FOXNews.com - New Patriot Act Provision Creates Tighter Barrier to Officials at Public Events – Politics
Republican Party Democratic Party Political Spectrum." Breaking News Latest News
Current News - FOXNews.com. 20 Mar. 2009
.

Fox news, this is a good cite because this tells how the media portrays the Patriot act. This article talks about why the patriot act needs to be established. This article was posted a few weeks after 9/11. This is somewhat persuasive, persuades the people that this bill needs to be passed in order to protect our freedom. This article shows fear and how easy people can be manipulated into promoting something that will affect there future. Solid article that will help tell me why and how they patriot act came to be.

Patriot act takes away American's freedom - News." Easterner. 20 Mar. 2009
.

This cite gives good evidence of what the Patriot takes away from our rights. They give good examples that show we no longer have any privacy. The government can learn, disclose, snoop around any of your stuff. Relatively short article, the information is good. I think this will help because this shows people how destructive the Patriot act is to personal freedom. This article tells about how the government has warrantless searches, article is really going to help in my paper. They discuss how fear caused the patriot act, now the fear is gone and people are angry, disputes amongst the patriot act, will help prove my point.

"What is the Protect America Act?" United States Department of Justice. 20 Mar. 2009
.

I like this site for several reasons. This is a .gov usually a good source to find concrete, accurate government researched material. The cite looks legit, the title is Persevering Life and Liberty. The cite offers a brief summary of the current Patriot Act. There are news articles on the bottom of the page that give you the latest information regarding the Patriot Act in the current news. I like this cite allows me the most recent information. They also have a section which states the myths of the patriot act. They have articles and summaries of how congress feels about the patriot act now that 9/11 has passed.

Research proposal ideas's

Working Title: Patriot Act

Submitted By: Devin Wieseckel

Research Question:
Is the Patriot act a violation of our freedom or is the Patriot act necessary for our protection? Why would the Patriot act be a violation of our freedom, How did the Patriot become a law if so many people are agains't it? Why do people believe the patriot act is necessary for our protection? Why and how did the Patriot come to be determined, what instegated the creation of the patriot act?

Introduction
[Write a summary of your research topic, explaining what it is, how it fits into writing studies, why you are interested in it, and why it is a significant topic to address in a research paper for this class.]
The Patriot act is laws that were passed after 9/11, the law was put into place to protect us from terroism. The Patriot Act is laws that say the goverment can intervene with our freedom at any given time. The goverment can perform phone taps, warrantless searches. To sum up the Patriot Act in a few words could be the, the goverment spying at us at any given moment for any given reason. The Patriot act fits into the writing studies in several ways. I am interested in this topic because of several reasons. The first is that our freedom's are being taken away one by one. The goverment disguieses these acts, they say they will help us, when all they really do is limit our freedom. Another example is, we don't have any freedom anymore, the goverment takes away our privacy, they are passing laws on where and when to smoke, the list goes on. I believe freedom and the ten amendments are what defines Americans, our ability to be independant and do what we want. I think the class will find this topic to be of extreme interest. I have talked to several of my peers about this topic and they are completly oblivious to what it is. Some people I have talked to did not even realize laws like these existed. People need to be aware with what rights we have and what rights are being taken from us.

Research Method[Explain how you believe you can go about doing your research to answer your question. What kind of sources do you anticipate using (or have already identified)? What primary research could be done by you to supplement the secondary research written by other people? What types of texts do you envision looking at? What types of theories, concepts, or features might you focus on within these texts?]
I believe a vast majority of my research will be online. I plan to look at goverment websites to recieve the most precise and accurate information. I plan on looking at politicians webpages. I have started doing some research and since this is a fairly new topic there is not a lot of books on this topic. I plan to read old newspapers and blogs which will post how people feel about these acts. The old newspapers and blogs will also tell me how politicians support or disapprove of passing the patriot act. Most of my research will be based on statitics and facts from goverment polls. I also plan on watching debates online of when there were passing the law. I hope to find usefull information on youtube. When I watch these debates I can use the ideas of rhetoric to see how they debated the topic and if they were effective in proving there point. I also would like to search opposing viewpoints to see how they view the patriot act, look at pro's and con's, try and find solid, concrete evidence. I also plan on looking at different media's, possibly some speeches and posters. Once I get my information and perspectives from all sides I plan on organinzing my information and start writing my paper.

Rhetorical Anaylsis

The Right to Drink According to Dictionary.com an argument is, “ A statement, reason, or fact for or against a point.” In the article, “Debate on lowering drinking age bubbling up” is an intense controversy over what the legal drinking should be. I have found this topic to be an extreme interest to me, do to the fact that I am a nineteen year old male, registered for selective service and legally obliged to taking actions into my own hands. This is an important issue to anyone, but particularly to those who can fight for there country, but can't legally drink. I have researched several sights and found that MSNBC to have the most accurate and concrete information. I feel that when this article was written the author had a biased opinion. Having read the article several times, I feel that the information being presented is leaning towards lowing the drinking age to age eighteen. Some ideas that support my thoughts are, that David J. Hanson, the alcohol expert at the State College of New York stated, “Just like during national Prohibition, the law has pushed and forced underage drinking and youthful drinking underground, where we have no control over it.” In reality this makes perfect sense. The author wants us to be aware that even though the legal drinking age is twenty-one, several people drink underage and make bad choices. If they government lowers the drinking age to age eighteen, we can control what and how much young adolescents drink. However, the other flip side to this argument Mark Rosenker, the chairman on the Transportation safety board makes a good point insistng that, “Why would we repeal or weaken laws that save lives? It doesn’t make sense.” He means that since the drinking age is at twenty-one people are older and should be more responsible. This is a solid counter point, that the author uses to make sure the drinking age stays at age twenty-one. In theory, with less people drinking on the streets, the less likely for drunk driving accidents. Once the author gives a few key solid points for each side of the argument, he then goes into defining the laws in different states. I personally believe this was a smart decision that the author did. This allows other states to know why they want or do not want to lower the drinking age. I am rather surprised that the drinking age is twenty-one all around, yet each state has different ordinances. The drinking age is a Federal Law In Wisconsin adolescents under the age of twenty-one can enter a bar or drinking environment as long as they have a legal guardian residing over them. I believe that intention of this article was to persuade the readers of the pro's and con's of lowering the drinking age. I think the article is to persuade people because the author gives key points on keeping and lowering the drinking age. This could also be an informative article. The author gives the laws of each state on what is legal and defines pro's and con's of lowering the drinking age. I do not feel this would be an entertaining article, because at no point in the entire passage does the author make a joke or any type of amusement. When the author wrote this article the majority of the article is based on facts and quotes. There was not much original thinking. I feel as if the author regurgitated the information and spit it back in a different viewpoint. Although, I feel that if you are writing a persuasive article, there needs to be solid evidence to enforce your ideas and viewpoints. I did like that the quotes did support the authors ideas, they quotes made sense. I have read several articles were the quotes do not pertain to the article.. I feel that even though the article doesn't have much author insight, I feel that the article was well written. I can tell that the author has good sentence structure and the paragraphs flow. The author has all his ideas in the same paragraph, he has key points in each paragraph followed up by a couple sentences supporting his thoughts. I think that when the author wrote this article he used the ideas of Logo's. I think the article relates to Logo's ideas because he persuades by the use of reasoning. This is Logo's views because the author uses solid evidence that can be backed by facts to persuade you to one side. The author uses quote's which defiantly show reasoning.

The writer is trying to find out "how students' constructs of "self" are reflected in school genres and how their backgrounds, specific academic disciplines, and institutional goals affect those
constructs." I think what this means is how students do in school with different professors and work ethics and how they follow or imitate there professors actions. In a sense, its almost as if the author wants to see how much of an impression the professors make on the students identity.

The author collects this data in several ways, such as she went to St. Augustines college and interviewed students like Amy. She also observed classes and how professors ideas, teachings stuck to students. Dr. Hanson has an affect on Amys words. She uses similar words and ideas that he had used earlier in the class.

Now days self representation is important. Self representation defines who we are, this is done in several ways. Many people represent themesevles with different clothing options, example: you skateboard so you wear vans shoes, or buy Emerica clothing. I see lots of people define themselves with personal characteristics. Many people wear certain colonges of famous people who they like or they might shave there face a certain way. People get piercings and tattoo's that help define who they are or what they believe in.

From the reading Cultural Studies the author is trying to figure out more about music, almost trying to discover the purpose of music. Trying to figure what bands are authentic. He wants to know why some musicians play down the music and almost disgrace music while others praise it. In some sense he wants to know what fuels music. The author quotes many things. I am not sure what page this is but the author mentions the word "real." I think he wants to know what music means to rock and rolls stars and classical musicians. He seems to desire the knowledge of why certain people perform the music they do, what sets them apart from the others. When I look around I see several people trying to establish authenticity. Many people dress they way the would like to present themselves. An example of this would if you dress in a shirt and tie everyday. People would see you as a professional. Another example could be if someone wants to stand out in crowds, they could do crazy things to there hair and wear extremely unusual clothing. This would help make someone stand out in crowds and be there own being. They wouldn't have guidelines. That is the nice thing about America, it allows you to be whoever you want to be.

The writer uses research questions that are help guide her work. She wants to know more about the editors process, how they do it, what they look for, or ignore. She wants to know if the editors different strategies work differently, what works what doesn't. She wants to compare the ideas, thoughts and actions of the editors.

Professional editing differs in several ways. One is that professional editing is a process unto itself that occurs

independently of writing, whereas self-revision is one of the three sub-

processes of writing, the other two being planning and drafting. Professional editors have there work revised by a client or someone else with a professional degree. Plus professional editors do not intervene with the authors idea, they are merely for grammar an structural support. Professional editors is given a mandate to revise by an editor. Where as students use peer review and get feed back on how to change the story and address the ideas of the paper.

Research Methodology is the processes used by editors

as they perform their work and to grasp the justifications underlying par-

ticular modifications made to texts, we conducted a case study in a real

work environment. This is a way to collect knowledge and get reseacrh, helps avoid biased information. They collect there info by retrospective verbalization which is getting all there ideas and info put together before talking about it. They analyze there info by videotaping, recording, they take text of the original and compare with the modified version. When reading they read the passage a few times, once to get the meaning and then again to modify the work try and make changes, see whats wrong.

Hello parents,

I have always believed that virginity is a sacred gift. However, at my stay at college, my views had changed. I have learned that virginity is just a tool to keep the status quo intact. I need money for my college education which I have always felt was very important. I do not feel this is degrading. This is a good way to pay for college without taking out loans and putting stress on you for paying for my tuition. This is also a project for my masters in marraige and family therapy, titled the Value of Virginity. I hope you support me in my decision and do not think of me any differently.

Love,
Natalie

Blitzer feels that Rhetorical Situations are different then other writing styles because the characteristics are different. He discusses how the word "situation" is not common in his style of writing. His type of writing involves people, audiences, speakers, conflicts. While the typical storybook writer talks about a situation. One might how sparky the dog crosses the street. There isn't any real argument here, its all about fixing something. While Blitzer believes that objects ideas should be based around persuasions, arguments, debates. His style involves getting people active, rather then listening, he makes them participate.

Blitzer describes Rhetorical situation as how things should be described, or what characteristics there are. He also says that many Rhetorical situations go unanswered. He wants to know what the nature of the situation is. I think what he means by Rhetorical Situation is the background information that sets the idea up. We have the characteristics, nature and information to allow the persuasion to take place, almost like the prelude.

Exigence is an imperfection and something that needs to be fixed. An example of exigence is bill that passes in the house but you do not agree on. You could write letters to your congress men and show that you disapprove of there new bill and try to change things. Another example is that if you do not like the security in the campus you could write a letter to the dean asking for tighter security and telling him the reason that security is not up to par if you will. The last exampel of exigence could be going on strike, the workers go on strike because there is something wrong and they strike until the issue gets fixed.

In the book English studies, several disputes occur.  In the argument "THe Division, Integration, and Transfer of Knowledge," David Easton argues, "With increasing acceleration in the twentieth century, the social sciences and the humanities began to specialize with a vengeance so that today the basic disciplines have not only clearly identified themselves, but have subdivided internally into many subfields; often, even within these, specialization continues apace."
I think what Easton argues is that with all the new technology, teaching styles and constantly updated information that appears in the twentieth century can not keep up with everything.  In the English department this could mean that with all the new information and techniques its hard to teach students exactly what is best for them.  So instead they suggest the "Coverage Model" which is dividing up literature into three periods, genres and authors.  This is a good and bad thing.  With the literature being covered, but not in any depth people believe that there is to much information, to broad.  In order to experience the full affect of all these historical literature events you need to break them down and have a class on each one.  Not compress all of these events into one class and just hit the basic topics.
I think what the author wants is all these subcategories need to be taught in detail.  With the constant new knowledge and appreciation for literature.  We need to take the time and study what each of these ideas are.  We shouldn't just rush through everything, we need to take time and learn about authors, teaching styles and writings

When we are told to invest in the universe which to me means that we must be unique.  We need to search new ideas and theories on which to write about.  These days there is so much published information out there that in order for us to succeed we need to stand out.  When we write in college we need to expand our ideas.  We need to further our experience in all of our writings.
When he suggest we become insiders, must be involved in our work.  We must have a connection with what we are writing about.  Once we do this we learn to enjoy our writings much better.  We connect on a more personal Level.
In the first paper we realize that the paper is not very alive.  In this sense I mean that the writer does not show compassion about his work.  He writes the paper with very little detail and information.  The writer needs to be affectionate and care about what he is writing.  The second paper is a well thought out and developed.  The writer shows that he cares about the paper and connects on that personal level.  The writer seems  to have taken time and shows compassion and taken the time to write a good paper.

"No Hunting"

The claim that is being made is that hunting is not allowed in this area.  The data is the sign on  the side of the road that states no hunting.  The warrant is assuming that since the sign was posted people would respect the authority and not hunt in this area.  The backing is showing the no hunting signs with bullet holes in it.  The bullets in the sign show that people are still hunting in a no hunting zone, and not following authority.  There do not seem to be any grounds.  The rebutted could be that since the sign looks old people may have changed there minds and stopped hunting in the designated area, since the sign is old we have no idea.  The qualifiers could be that hunting occurs everywhere and wherever there are animals people will hunt.  They could also say that they did not see the sign and thought the land was public land.

The claim that is being made in this picture is that hunting is not allowed.  There are signs posted on a country road, however the old sign has bullet holes in it.  I believe this to be a claim of policy.  This is a sign that is strategically placed so that hunting would not occur, making sure that people are aware of the rules or policy.  The evidence that supports the claim is a country road with no buildings, just forest and fields, a prime place for hunting.  This seems like a very rustic area.  Although the sign does clearly depict the area is not designated for hunting, but people seem to break the rules and hunt in the no hunt zone.  The evidence for people hunting here is the sign has bullet holes going through it, kind of ironic!
